Description
The Glen Haven Community Center, located among the homes of over 40 refugee and immigrant families, offers a welcoming space for community members, some who have recently arrived and others who have been at Glen Haven for years now.

Glen Haven volunteers and staff provide individuals the support they need to find their roots in Greensboro through after-school tutoring and mentoring for youth, entrepreneurial and empowerment group for craftswomen, ESOL classes for adults, computer literacy and job training courses, and more. The center’s foundation is its after-school tutoring and mentoring program, where volunteers help students with homework and building reading skills, provide support to students who may be experiencing bullying, racism, or discrimination at school or on site, and reciprocally learn from the students, who have traveled to Greensboro from countries such as Liberia, Nepal, Bhutan, Burma, the highlands of Vietnam, and Mexico.

Through consistent and dedicated volunteering, volunteers can watch the progress of a student, not only through report cards and how well they can read, but they will also grow in many ways right in front of you.

After School Tutoring and Mentoring
Support refugee and immigrant youth and families by creating a welcoming and safe space for learning, providing educational and entrepreneurial encouragement for youth and adults, and connecting families to the greater Greensboro community.

March 31, 2014 This week at Glen Haven...
Guilford students new to Glen Haven came for a special service day and helped our students plant flowers! Thanks and love goes out to the Bonner Congress Representatives for all of their support, time, and energy!

March 5, 2014

Today our new volunteers went through training with Frannie from the Center for New North Carolinians - looking forward to the Spring '14 groups! Monthly reflections for volunteers will start at the end of the month!

Jan. 27, 2014 Teen Time and our middle schoolers went to a magnet school fair (1/25/14) and learned about different programs they can enroll into that are career-oriented. We're looking for new volunteers for this Spring semester! If you're interested, please feel free to come any day this week, and contact Mary at heiseymc@guilford.edu.

We're back in business! Tutoring and all programs are back in swing this week. Because of a lack of volunteers (the downside of J-Term), we are implementing a new system where the kids come in waves to be tutored. Calmer, quieter, and the kids are able to get one-on-one help this way. Drop in and lend us an hour or two some time this week! We'd love to have you! Contact Mary at heiseymc@guilford.edu if interested.

Nov. 23, 2013
Today Elon University came for a work day, painting the walls of the center which was MUCH need! I'm always amazed with the kindness and generosity I find in- and outside of the center. Guilford's PRIDE group came to Teen Time to discuss everything LGBTQQA-related with our students, emerging them in a conversation they have never seriously considered or talked about out loud before.

Nov. 15, 2013

Things at Glen Haven are going very well! Numerous Guilford students have emailed me about volunteer and work study positions - we've been generating interest just through word of mouth! Preliminary collaboration is happening between Josè Oliva of Roads to College and our high school program, as well as an upcoming donation drive and dance with Elimu and Ashton Woods (check them out by clicking their tabs above!).

Nov. 8, 2013
Our younger Glen Haven residents went to Guilford College for Fall Fest on 11/2, sponsored by the Bonner Center. There were bouncy houses, pumpkin painting, a haunted house, and a campus tour for the older students. Teen Time is meeting for our fourth time this upcoming Saturday, and our mini-workshop will focus on bullying. Our on-site congregational nurse gave flu shots to our residents without medical insurance on 11/6 and will come back again later in the month for health screenings. After tutoring today, some of our kids helped us carry bags and bags full of blankets for our blanket give-away Friday 11/8.
